ยซ ยซ ยซ IC INFORMATION

Name: Joe Goldberg
Door: Door Pass!

Canon: You (novel series by Caroline Kepnes)
Canon Point: Post-You Love Me epilogue, where Joe is living in Central Florida, maintaining a bar-bookshop combo called Empathy Bordello.

Age: Early-mid 30s
Appearance: Penn Badgley could sell watches.

History: Act 1: You | Act 2: Hidden Bodies | Act 3: You Love Me

Personality:
POSITIVE TRAIT: Sensitive: Joe is very, very good at acing the first impression, for the most part, and that's because he's sensitive to his surroundings and people to extremes. He revels in this sensitivity, being incredibly observant, especially to things that catch his eye and connect with him, seen in the ways he takes stock of all he can with Beck, Love, and Mary Kay throughout his romantic career, cavorting through the highest highs (Beck calling him her boyfriend in an email). While he feels the lows as well, Joe tends to channel this as anger and bruises to his pride as opposed to sadness. He doesn't necessarily follow this up in the healthiest way (pressing your ear to your crush's door while she has sex, not knowing you're out there, is super normal, as is kidnapping and killing her fuck buddy), but he drinks details and changes in his environment and targets, using his observations to do whatever he can to make his partner and others happy. Additionally, art of all sorts, including music, TV, and especially books, resonates incredibly strongly with Joe, giving him an intelligent, cultured charm.

TOP NEGATIVE TRAIT: Entitled: Joe's insecurities, desperation for control, and resentment for modern culture have led him to fully believe that he deserves more than he has, whether it be money (though he'd never give up his identification with the working class), sex, or interaction. Going off of this, he's also tremendously jealous, which is why he killed Benji, who Beck was sleeping with, despite calling it a protective gesture or noting that she deserved better. His arrogance in this regard sometimes blinds his otherwise stellar perception skills: his desire and pride with Beck caused him to miss obvious body language that she wasn't interested, and his commitment to living a happy family life with Love obscured the fact that she'd set up his arrest for stalking and murder. He's saddled with the idea that he isn't only better than everyone, he's the best choice anyone could possibly make. His justifications for his choices are beyond reproach, although he'd hypocritically criticize anyone else for doing the same thing (such as calling Peach Salinger, Beck's closest friend, a creep and a stalker, when. Well.) Ultimately, this side of his personality is what drives him to violence.

NEGATIVE TRAIT: Insecure: In Joe's words, he gets "nasty when he's nervous," and is hyper-aware of when he doesn't fit in. This is most prevalent in matters of wealth and class, seen (at least mildly) in the way he removes himself from a sexual encounter with Love for being made โ€” unintentionally โ€” to feel like wait staff. Joe has a deep need for validation, making him force control in every situation to feel empowered. In an extreme sense, this is why he keeps his glass cage: it allows him to house his desires, whether they be books, lovers, or targets, in a controlled environment that he can reign over.

NEGATIVE TRAIT: Manipulative: While Joe may be perceptive and romantic, he rarely uses these powers for good. He could use his charm and intelligence to win interest and relationships of his own merit, but he takes his observation skills far past the limits by, for instance, stalking his targets to "get to know them" and a warped sense of protection. He then uses the knowledge gleaned in order to make his interest feel more comfortable with him, luring them into a false sense of security. In a more innocent sense, he employs this with Mary Kay after learning of her love of Succession and fit men, working out to an unhealthy degree while binging the show and later making his jokes about it appear natural to her. Additionally, after nearly compromising Love's career as an actress due to his jealousy about her romantic scenes, Joe's sulking behavior made Love feel obligated to give him a blowjob, a boundary that she had noted with him prior.

Powers and Abilities: Nothing magical or out of the ordinary. Joe does have an above average sense of observation and knowledge of how to murder people, though, as well as decent physical fitness/prowess and dexterity (very much needed to disassemble and reassemble a glass cage).
Inventory: A pill bottle with two (2) Xanax pills.
